Capriano Del Colle must rank in my top 3 new discoveries on my wine journeys in Italy. It happened after a chance meeting in a restaurant in Brescia which led to me being given a tip to head south of the city and off I went to meet the Lazzari family. Davide, the eldest son, met us that day and was gracious enough to give, my sister and I, a tour of the winery, the vineyards but more importantly explained the history of this small and as yet little-known wine region.

When Davide talks, you feel his love for Capriano Del Colle, you feel his pride when he gets to showcase his region to other people and when you taste Lazzari wine you feel lucky to have discovered this gem of a winemaker.

That first day I was there I met 3 generations of Lazzari winemakers including Davide’s grandfather, father and brother. A true family affair.

They are a family that works hard to preserve their traditions and maintain the health of their soil by way of organic agriculture, however, I soon realised that they were prepared to experiment a little with agronomical techniques to imbue their wines with the flavour and history of their vineyards. The strict rule is that they only use their carefully selected and handpicked grapes.

Lazzari are skilled winemakers with real heart and every glass will leave you astounded.
