Valtellina Superiore DOCG Vintage 2009
£26.50
Le Strie vineyards are located in the Valtellina Superiore DOCG vine-growing area. Due to the altitude, the temperatures are cooler which results in a very elegant Nebbiolo with elegant spicy notes and a medium tannin. The terraces on which the vines grow and the steep slope exposure that they receive give this Nebbiolo very interesting characteristics making this a variety that you will surely want to savour.
For the best way to experience this fabulous appellation, we recommend a serving temperature of 18°C and to use big stem glasses in order for its true nature to express itself. Ideally, use a decanter to avoid the deposit that you may find at the bottom but this will also allow the wine to breathe. These are wines that age with grace and character.
50% of the grapes are in “Valgella” and the other half are in “Sassella”. While the vinification method is the same, grapes from “Sassella” and “Valgella” are treated differently. Both are carefully selected and harvested by hand, but where “Sassella” grapes are de-stemmed and crushed as soon as possible, “Valgella” grapes are partially dried for about 25-30 days and then vinified. Once the fermentation is finished, the two wines are blended and aged creating a deep ruby red wine with spice and liquorice notes, a dry, rich texture, and long finish.
Neeche Comment: “Le Strie vines sit on terraces on steep alpine slopes and as a result the harvested grapes are collected by helicopter”
