Pussenti – Nerello Mascalese – Etna Rosso DOC 2021

£22.75

Pussenti – meaning “powerful” in the local dialect—is a wonderfully consistent, deep ruby red and the undisputed heavyweight of the estate. Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grape, it offers a sophisticated bouquet of ripe wild berries, warm spices, and a delicate touch of vanilla, leading into a “big” nose of plum, leather, and dark fruit. On the palate, it is broad and velvety, defined by sweet, noble tannins and a persistent volcanic savouriness that only ancient, pre-phylloxera roots can produce.

These gnarled vines have survived for nearly a century in the black gravel of the Calderara district where vines have been grown for centuries. This wine is produced from grapes grown on a centuries-old vineyard, drawing their strength from the mineral-rich soil at 650 metres to yield a concentrated fruit. The result is an elegant, commanding expression of Etna with a long, flinty finish. A true heritage piece built for the cellar, it pairs beautifully with roasted red meats, game, and mature cheeses.
